Xuefei Yang’s superb 2010 recording for EMI Classics, Concierto de Aranjuez, naturally features her acclaimed version of Joaquín Rodrigo’s most famous work, along with solo guitar works by Rodrigo and Isaac Albéniz. But the most fascinating piece on the disc is the first recording of an original concerto by British composer Stephen Goss, based on the music of Albéniz, simply titled The Albéniz Concerto. Read the story of how the guitarist and composer collaborated closely to create this modern concerto masterwork. “The danger for me,” Goss said, “was to imagine myself as an equal partner with Albéniz, instead of remaining a servant to his music. Consequently, I tried to write myself out of the concerto so that people can go and hear it and believe that it could have been written by Albéniz.”
